Alternatives To Chipping
Chipping the ball onto the green can be very difficult, as many things can go wrong:
1. Chipping requires the golfer to hit down and make contact with the ball first instead of the ground. This narrow contact zone makes it a very difficult type of shot, often resulting in catching the ground early (fat shot), or making contact using the iron’s bottom leading edge (thin shot).
2. Golfers tend to make the mistake of hitting up on the ball (scooping), trying to get additional height. This action doesn't actually work and usually makes the ball come up short.
3. When trying to hit a short chip shot, a golfer will often take too large a swing then end up decelerating before contact to prevent it from going too long; this deceleration creates much inconsistency.
Here are some great alternatives to chipping that can improve your chances of getting the ball up and down from around the green:
• From the rough around the green, instead of chipping with a standard iron you should consider a number 8 Hybrid with 38 degrees of loft. The Hybrid will be much better for most golfers, especially those who prefer a sweeping swing rather than hitting down like with a standard iron. The Hybrid will move through the grass without twisting or hanging up like a standard iron. Another benefit of the Hybrid; it also perfectly fills the role of other clubs, like a standard 8 iron or extra specialty clubs like chippers. (Likewise, Hybrids are available in many different lofts to replace any club and address any chipping situation.) A key feature of the Hybrid is its snag-less body and sole design.
• From the first cut around the green, a Hybrid Putter comes in very handy. The snag-less body and sole design will provide the same performance from the first cut as if you were putting on the green.
