Reasons to Consider a #4 Fairway Wood

source: Thomas Golf Newsletter 2/2/08

For many golfers, a #4 fairway wood makes a very good choice, here’s why:

• With about 16 degrees of loft, it provides more loft than a modern 3 wood, which typically has only about 13 degrees of loft. The additional loft makes it much easier to hit the ball off the fairway, giving you more height and forgiveness.

• The club-length of a 4 wood is 1 inch shorter than a 3 wood, making it easier to consistently hit the sweet spot.

• The 4 wood will have about 10 more grams of head-weight compared to a 3 wood. This additional weight will help you in two ways; getting the ball up off the fairway and hitting out of the rough.

• The 4 wood gives you added flexibility within your 14 club limit. For example, you could choose to go with a Driver, 4 wood, and 7 wood instead of the Driver, 3, 5, and 7. This opens up a space to add an extra wedge or hybrid iron.
